Hello Tin Thimble fans! Ok, we have a bit of an obsession: embroidery.
There’s something so calming about the focus and methodology that this skill requires. It’s a humble art, a quiet craft with a beautiful historical story. It’s also quite the chameleon, and we think it’s a lovely example of how handicrafts evolve with each new generation.
If you’re on Instagram, all you have to do is search #modernembroidery to see the stunning results of needle, thread, and a splash of patience. This is not an outdated handicraft! And what we think is even more admirable is that there is exceptional beauty in both the embroidery of 300 years ago and the embroidery of today. The same skill, the same materials, held by hands all around the world, have been creating visually stunning results for generations.
Chris Everman recently created several beginning embroidery classes to teach with us where students will learn lovely, basic stitches. These samplers are such a fantastic way to get comfortable with this needle craft, even if you’ve never held a needle or made more than a few “oh crap!” emergency mending stitches.
Jill has spent hours bagging, and pricing our huge selection of vintage embroidery transfers and Hannah has been adding some vintage gems to our Ebay and Etsy stores. There are also some fantastic, vintage, embroidery guides on our Etsy shop that we think are pretty darn cute. Pair one of those cuties with some needles, embroidery floss and a hoop and you have yourself a fantastic gift!
We even have a Pinterest board titled “Needle & Thread” where we post our favorite inspiration embroidered projects.
So many of our customers have fond memories of their grandmother, auntie or mom doing embroidery and we’d love to hear about your experiences with this timeless craft. Do you have a beautiful sampler or piece done by someone close to you? Share it with us!

I am interested is smocking baby cloths. Do you affer classes, or sell supplies for smocking?
The Tin Thimble Staff says
Thank you for reaching out Nora. Right now, we do not offer anything in smocking. However, we are working on expanding our embroidery classes, so if there’s a demand for a class, we’re working on filling it! Check back with us to see what will be offered in future. Good luck with your baby clothes, they’re sure to be adorable.
