The Tin Thimble

We all learned in third grade art class that blue & yellow make green, but what if you were to go a step beyond this basic concept and explore the entire rainbow? This is color play for fiber artists! In this class, students will learn the theory behind how colors mix and use this knowledge to make their own fiber color wheel, as well as card a gradient batt of complementary colors. While Henry & Roy know a thing or two about making and using drum carders, they consulted with chemist and well-known indie dyer Kimber Baldwin of Fiber Optic Yarns to help them understand the science of color. The result is a class that takes the theory of color blending and applies it to drum carding as never before. All carding and blending will be done on our Elite Series Drum Carders with each student using their own electric carder. All materials, carders, and tools will be provided by the instructors.

Prerequisite: While no carding experience is required for this class, the amount of carding that takes place during the day may be a challenge for someone that has never carded before. Some drum carding experience or having taken our ‘Exploring the Drum Carder’ class is preferred.

Instructor: Henry & Roy Clemes
Class Fee: $125 + $30 materials fee

List of materials and/or advance preparation required of students: None, but students should bring an attitude for learning. All materials and equipment will be provided by the instructors.

Materials fee: $30 includes all fiber carded during class, batt lifter refills for storing carded batts, and use of carders.

This class will be taught by the tag team of Henry and Roy Clemes. A lifelong woodworker and small business owner, Henry has been building fiber art equipment for over 45 years and drum carders for 38 years. Roy grew up in his family’s woodshop and is one of the few 30-year-olds with 25 years of experience in his field. Together they have introduced many innovations to the fiber arts community and their equipment is known for being not only thoughtfully engineered but visually pleasing and durable as well. They regularly consult and instruct spinners, felters, fiber growers, and professional fiber artists in the use of drum carders for fiber prep.
