It makes us feel very special to host Leiko for her yearly workshops in our store. Not only is Leiko Uchiyama an incredible felter, instructor, and all-around creative, but she has such a kind disposition, and that’s important to all of us here. She’ll be here this April to teach her Pine Needle & Stone Wall Scarves, during two separate two day workshops and we’re so excited! We don’t teach anything similar to her techniques, so this is a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn an entirely new method. She’s only here once a year, people!
This is the Stone Wall Scarf. Look at all that beautiful texture. Yhoooo-Wee! It reminds me of peeling bark, and my mind races with the possibility of all the different colors you could get peeking through the wool. Oh, the inspiration it conjures!
Leiko is well known for her Pine Needle technique. This delicate, airy, technique is weighted down a bit by the solid squares of roving in this scarf, giving it a little more body.
Leiko has also sent us her exquisite hand-dyed silk and roving, which is for sale exclusively to students who sign up for her classes. If we have any left over, after the class, those will be available for everyone to purchase.
Here are some of Leiko Uchiyama’s students from one of her workshops in 2014. Look at how beautiful their pieces are!
If you’re interested in joining us the next time Leiko is in The Thimble Classroom you can keep an eye on our class schedule but if you’d like to be among the first to know when registration opens for her March 2019 workshop, take a look below!
